3- to 5-inch FPV racing motor

Xnova 1406 Supersonic

Xnova's 14 g 1406 racing motor for 3S–4S; the 3100KV pulls 568 g on a DYS 4040 three-blade at 14.8 V in Xnova's test.

  • 3- to 4-inch racing, and light 5-inch builds on 3S
  • 3–4S (3100KV, 3500KV) or 3S (4000KV)
  • Props with an M5 nut
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 1406 motor drawn from Xnova’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are Xnova’s bench figures for the DYS4040 Tri prop at 14.8 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 50% throttle.

Version

Xnova tested it on 11.1 V and 14.8 V.

Weight

the same for all three KVs; Xnova's test sheet gives 14.2–14.3 g including the prop adapter
Peak current

At 60% with the DYS4040 Tri: 289 g of thrust, 8.1 A, 0 W, 0.00 g per watt.

On your quad

3.5 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 2,272 g with the DYS4040 Tri at 14.8 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 1,156 g, 1.8 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What you get

  • Three KVs, 14 g

    3100KV and 3500KV for 3–4S and 4000KV for 3S, each 14 g.

  • Smooth and balanced

Xnova lists low cogging torque and smooth running, and says the motors are precisely balanced and fully tested.

  • Bench numbers

    At full throttle the 3100KV pulls 491 g on a Gemfan 5030 at 13.2 A on 11.1 V, and 568 g on a DYS 4040 three-blade at 20.4 A on 14.8 V.

ESC
Full-throttle currents on Xnova's bench run from 6.4 A (3100KV, DYS 3030 three-blade, 11.1 V) to 25.3 A (4000KV, DYS 4040 three-blade, 11.1 V); the 3100KV peaks at 20.4 A on 14.8 V. (Xnova test result)
Props
Xnova tested 3-, 4- and 5-inch props: DYS 3030 and 4040 three-blades, a DYS 4045 and a Gemfan 5030. Props fit the M5 shaft. (Xnova test result, Xnova drawing)

Bench data

Redrawn from Xnova’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 3100KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.845,8805,353 Hz32,116
4S full16.852,0806,076 Hz36,456
6S nominal22.268,8208,029 Hz48,174
6S full25.278,1209,114 Hz54,684

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from Xnova’s published sizes: the 14 × 6 mm stator, 19 mm bell, 15 mm height, 5 mm shaft and 12 mm mounting circle. Anything Xnova doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
