5-inch FPV freestyle motor

RCinPower Wasp Major 22.6-6.5

A 5-inch motor on RCinPower's own 22.6 × 6.5 mm stator, with a one-piece 7075 bell and a hollow titanium shaft, 30.5 g, pulling 1875–2313 g per motor on its 24 V bench (1860KV, five props).

  • 5- to 6-inch props
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 22.6-6.5 motor drawn from RCinPower’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are RCinPower’s bench figures for the Gemfan 6 × 4.5, 2-blade prop at 24 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 50% throttle.

Version

RCinPower tested it at 21 V (5S) and 24 V (6S).

At 60% with the Gemfan 6 × 4.5, 2-blade: 1,115 g of thrust, 11.8 A, 283 W, 4.82 g per watt.

On your quad

14.2 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 9,252 g with the Gemfan 6 × 4.5, 2-blade at 24 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 4,458 g, 6.9 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What you get

  • 22.6 × 6.5 mm stator

A stator size RCinPower developed itself, between the usual 22 mm and 23 mm, which it says loses less and runs cooler.

    Source: RCinPower features 3

  • One-piece 7075 bell, titanium shaft

A one-piece 7075 aluminium bell and a semi-hollow TC4 titanium shaft reinforced where it takes load, for 30 g with the prop nut.

Source: RCinPower features 1, RCinPower features 2

  • Air channels through the stator

Four channels through the centre of the stator force air over the bearings and the inside of the stator, which RCinPower says keeps the bearing grease from breaking down.

    Source: RCinPower features 3

  • Tuned for racing

RCinPower says the throttle response is tuned for race tracks: fast and linear.

    Source: RCinPower features 1

  • Stiffer base

A tiered mount with V-shaped stress grooves, which RCinPower says saves weight without losing strength.

At full throttle on RCinPower's bench the 1860KV drew up to 33.3 A on 6S, the 2020KV 38 A on 6S and the 2420KV 45.9 A on 5S. RCinPower rates them at 35 A, 38 A and 46 A. (RCinPower spec sheets)
Props
Tested with HQProp Ethix S4 and S5, DAL T5147.5, Gemfan 5152 and a Gemfan 6 × 4.5 two-blade. The DAL T5147.5 was the most efficient and ran coolest; the 6-inch prop pulled the most and ran hottest, reaching 85 °C (1860KV, 6S) and 89 °C (2420KV, 5S). (RCinPower spec sheets)
Battery
5S–6S for the 1860KV and 2020KV, 4S–5S for the 2420KV. (RCinPower spec sheets)
Frame

Bench data

Redrawn from RCinPower’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

  • Bell. One piece of 7075 aluminium with a five-spoke top. (RCinPower features 1)
  • Shaft. Semi-hollow TC4 titanium alloy, 4 mm, reinforced at the points that take load, with an M5 thread for the prop nut. (RCinPower features 2)
  • Magnets. N52H magnets, which RCinPower says have higher remanence and coercivity. (RCinPower features 2)
  • Stator. 22.6 mm across and 6.5 mm tall, wound with single-strand single-crystal oxygen-free copper, with four air channels through its centre. (RCinPower features 3)
  • Base. Tiered, with V-shaped stress grooves and four M3 holes on a 16 × 16 mm pattern; RCinPower also mentions a damping design for bearing life. (RCinPower features 2)

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 1860KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.827,5283,212 Hz19,270
4S full16.831,2483,646 Hz21,874
6S nominal22.241,2924,817 Hz28,904
6S full25.246,8725,468 Hz32,810

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from RCinPower’s published sizes: the 22.6 × 6.5 mm stator, 28.49 mm bell, 18 mm height, 5 mm shaft, 16 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything RCinPower doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
