5–6-inch FPV freestyle and long-range motor

MEPS SZ2408

A 40 g uni-bell 2408 for 5–6 inch freestyle and long-range quads in 1900KV (6S) and 2500KV (4S); on MEPS's bench the 1900KV pulls 2595.5 g at full throttle on a Gemfan 6040 three-blade at 25.2 V.

  • 5–6 inch freestyle and long-range quads
  • 6S (1900KV) or 4S (2500KV)
  • 5–6 inch three-blade props such as the Gemfan 51466 and 6040
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 2408 motor drawn from MEPS’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are MEPS’s bench figures for the GF6040-3 prop at 25.2 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 10% throttle.

Version

Rated 4–6S; MEPS's pick for 5-inch freestyle and 6-inch builds on 6S. Tested at 16.8 V with a Gemfan 6040 and at 25.2 V with Gemfan 51466 and 6040 three-blades and MEPS's SZ5145.

At 60% with the GF6040-3: 1,422 g of thrust, 25.6 A, 631 W, 2.25 g per watt.

On your quad

16.0 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 10,382 g with the GF6040-3 at 25.2 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 5,688 g, 8.8 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What to pair it with

Our reading of MEPS’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
MEPS's peak currents are 73 A (1900KV) and 73.5 A (2500KV), both on a 6-inch Gemfan 6040. MEPS advises matching the ESC to that, and a 90% motor output limit in Betaflight on a 60 A ESC; its parts list names its NEONCORE F405 60A stack and T-Hobby's V70A SE 8S stack. (MEPS spec table, MEPS 1900KV data test, MEPS 2500KV data test, MEPS product page)
Props
MEPS tested Gemfan 51466 and 6040 three-blades and its own SZ5145; its parts list names T-Hobby's T6143 6.1-inch three-blade. (MEPS 1900KV data test, MEPS 2500KV data test, MEPS product page)
Battery
6S for the 1900KV (rated 4–6S), 4S for the 2500KV. (MEPS spec table, MEPS product page)
Frame
Four M3 screws on a 16 mm circle (16 × 16 mm); M3×8 and M3×9 screws come in the box. (MEPS size chart, MEPS product page)

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 1900KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.828,1203,281 Hz19,684
4S full16.831,9203,724 Hz22,344
6S nominal22.242,1804,921 Hz29,526
6S full25.247,8805,586 Hz33,516

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from MEPS’s published sizes: the 24 × 8 mm stator, 29.88 mm bell, 20.3 mm height, 5 mm shaft, 16 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything MEPS doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
