Drone Motors

3–4-inch FPV freestyle, cinematic and long-range motor

MEPS SZ2104

An 18 g 2104 for 3–4 inch quads in 1800KV (6S) and 3000KV (4S); on MEPS's bench the 1800KV pulls 681.3 g at 25.2 V and the 3000KV 778.5 g at 16.8 V, both at full throttle on a D90 three-blade.

  • 3–4 inch freestyle, cinematic and long-range quads, small cinewhoops and ducted builds
  • 6S (1800KV) or 4S (3000KV)
  • 3-inch three-blade props such as MEPS's SZ3046
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 2104 motor drawn from MEPS’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are MEPS’s bench figures for the D90-3 prop at 25.2 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 10% throttle.

At 60% with the D90-3: 323 g of thrust, 4.1 A, 104 W, 3.10 g per watt.

On your quad

4.2 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 2,725 g with the D90-3 at 25.2 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 1,290 g, 2.0 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

Bench data

Redrawn from MEPS’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 1800KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.826,6403,108 Hz18,648
4S full16.830,2403,528 Hz21,168
6S nominal22.239,9604,662 Hz27,972
6S full25.245,3605,292 Hz31,752

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from MEPS’s published sizes: the 21 × 4 mm stator, 25.57 mm bell, 13.7 mm height, 1.5 mm shaft, 12 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything MEPS doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
