3–4-inch FPV freestyle and cinewhoop motor

MEPS SZ1507.5

A 16 g motor for 3-inch freestyle quads, cinewhoops and light 4-inch builds: N52H arc magnets, NMB bearings and a 5 mm shaft with an M5 prop nut, and 900.4 g of thrust at full throttle on MEPS's 25.2 V bench (2680KV, HQ3520).

  • 3-inch freestyle and cinewhoops, light 4-inch builds
  • 6S (2680KV) or 4S (3800KV)
  • props such as the HQ3520 and D90-3
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 1507.5 motor drawn from MEPS’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are MEPS’s bench figures for the HQ3520 prop at 25.2 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 10% throttle.

At 60% with the HQ3520: 449 g of thrust, 7.4 A, 186 W, 2.41 g per watt.

On your quad

5.5 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 3,602 g with the HQ3520 at 25.2 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 1,795 g, 2.8 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What you get for $16.90

  • 900 g on 6S

What to pair it with

Our reading of MEPS’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
MEPS's peak currents are 21.2 A (2680KV) and 30.1 A (3800KV, D90-3 at 16.8 V). MEPS suggests T-Hobby's F7 35A/45A AIO; a 35 A or larger ESC covers both. (MEPS product page, MEPS data test)
Props
MEPS tested an HQ3520 on both KVs and a D90-3 on the 3800KV; on 16.8 V the D90-3 draws 30.1 A for 747.2 g and the HQ3520 24.7 A for 766.7 g at full throttle. (MEPS data test)
Battery
6S for the 2680KV, 4S for the 3800KV. (MEPS product page)
Frame
Four M2 screws on a 12 mm circle (12 × 12 mm), for 3 and 4-inch frames. (MEPS size chart, MEPS product page)

Bench data

Redrawn from MEPS’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

  • Shaft. 5 mm, M5 × 0.8 thread 8.5 mm long, protrudes 12.6 mm above the bell. (MEPS size chart)
  • Magnets. N52H arc magnets. (MEPS parts picture)
  • Stator. The coils are wound on a stack of thin steel laminations: 15 × 7.5 mm (1507.5) (from the model's 1507.5 size code; the page gives no other stator figures). (MEPS product page)
  • Winding. 220 °C high-temperature wire. (MEPS parts picture)
  • Bearings. NMB, rated by MEPS for up to 10,000 hours. (MEPS parts picture)
  • Base. 4 × M2 holes on a 12 mm circle. (MEPS size chart)

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 2680KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.839,6644,627 Hz27,765
4S full16.845,0245,253 Hz31,517
6S nominal22.259,4966,941 Hz41,647
6S full25.267,5367,879 Hz47,275

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from MEPS’s published sizes: the 15 × 7.5 mm stator, 20.57 mm bell, 16.5 mm height, 5 mm shaft, 12 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything MEPS doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
