Drone Motors

7–9-inch cinematic and long-range FPV motor

MEPS NEON 2812

A 6S motor for 7–9 inch cinematic and long-range quads: 75 g with leads, a stainless steel shaft, a 6082 aluminium casing and NMB bearings, and up to 2757 g of thrust per motor on MEPS's 25.2 V bench with an 8-inch prop (1150KV).

  • 8-inch cinematic and long range (7–9 inch frames)
  • 6S
  • 7 and 8-inch three-blade props
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 2812 motor drawn from MEPS’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are MEPS’s bench figures for the MEPS SZ8045-3 prop at 25.2 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 10% throttle.

At 60% with the MEPS SZ8045-3: 979 g of thrust, 10.2 A, 255 W, 3.80 g per watt.

On your quad

13.2 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 8,580 g with the MEPS SZ8045-3 at 25.2 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 3,916 g, 6.0 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What to pair it with

Our reading of MEPS’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
MEPS's peak currents are 34.8 A (900KV) and 57.9 A (1150KV), the full-throttle draw of its SZ8045-3 tests. Its build guide pairs both with T-Hobby's F55A Pro III 4-in-1; a 60 A ESC covers the 1150KV's peak. (MEPS spec table, MEPS data test, MEPS product page)
Props
MEPS tested a 7-inch T7456-3 and 8-inch GF8040-3 and SZ8045-3 three-blade props; its guide suggests 8045 props. (MEPS data test, MEPS product page)
Battery
6S. MEPS's guide suggests a 4000–6000 mAh Li-ion pack for 900KV cruising, and an 1800–3300 mAh LiPo for the 1150KV. (MEPS spec table, MEPS product page)
Frame
Four M3 screws on a 19 mm circle (19 × 19 mm), for 7–9 inch frames. (MEPS size chart, MEPS product page)

Bench data

Redrawn from MEPS’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

  • Shaft. 5 mm stainless steel, M5 × 0.8 thread 8 mm long, protrudes 15.2 mm above the bell (the material is from MEPS's page (S1)). (MEPS size chart)
  • Bell. 6082 aluminium alloy casing. (MEPS product page)
  • Stator. The coils are wound on a stack of thin steel laminations: 28 × 12 mm (2812) (MEPS's page calls it the 2812 stator). (MEPS product page)
  • Bearings. NMB. (MEPS product page)
  • Base. 4 × M3 holes on a 19 mm circle (19 × 19 mm). (MEPS size chart)

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 900KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.813,3201,554 Hz9,324
4S full16.815,1201,764 Hz10,584
6S nominal22.219,9802,331 Hz13,986
6S full25.222,6802,646 Hz15,876

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from MEPS’s published sizes: the 28 × 12 mm stator, 35.16 mm bell, 24.9 mm height, 5 mm shaft, 19 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything MEPS doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
