5-inch FPV freestyle motor

MEPS NEON 2306 V2

A 5-inch freestyle motor on a 23 × 6 mm stator: 34 g with leads, a 6082 aluminium shell, N50H magnets and NMB bearings, and 1821 g of thrust per motor at full throttle on MEPS's 25.2 V bench (1950KV, SZ5145).

  • 5-inch freestyle
  • 6S (1950KV, 2050KV) or 4S (2550KV)
  • 5-inch three-blade props (MEPS SZ5145, SZ4942)
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 2306 motor drawn from MEPS’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are MEPS’s bench figures for the MEPS SZ5145 prop at 25.2 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 10% throttle.

Version

MEPS calls it the preferred choice for most 6S freestyle pilots. Tested at 25.2 V with SZ4942 and SZ5145 props.

At 60% with the MEPS SZ5145: 986 g of thrust, 14.4 A, 0 W, 2.80 g per watt.

On your quad

11.2 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 7,284 g with the MEPS SZ5145 at 25.2 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 3,944 g, 6.1 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

ESC
MEPS's peak currents are 44.95 A (1950KV), 49.02 A (2050KV) and 44.12 A (2550KV), about what its SZ5145 tests draw at full throttle (45.0, 49.0 and 44.1 A). A 50 A or larger 4-in-1 covers every version; MEPS suggests T-Hobby's V70A stack. (MEPS spec table, MEPS 1950KV data test, MEPS 2050KV data test, MEPS 2550KV data test, MEPS product page)
Props
MEPS tested its SZ5145 and SZ4942 three-blade props; the SZ5145 pulls 120–152 g more at full throttle, depending on KV. (MEPS 1950KV data test, MEPS 2050KV data test, MEPS 2550KV data test)
Battery
6S for 1950KV and 2050KV, 4S for 2550KV. (MEPS spec table)
Frame
Four M3 screws on a 16 mm circle (the 16 × 16 pattern of 5-inch frames). (MEPS size chart)

Bench data

Redrawn from MEPS’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

  • Rotor. A one-piece aluminium rotor with a 6082 aluminium alloy shell, which MEPS says lowers weight and improves balance. (MEPS product page)
  • Winding. MEPS says V2 has an upgraded electromagnetic winding and stator compared with the first version. (MEPS product page)

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 1950KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.828,8603,367 Hz20,202
4S full16.832,7603,822 Hz22,932
6S nominal22.243,2905,051 Hz30,303
6S full25.249,1405,733 Hz34,398

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from MEPS’s published sizes: the 23 × 6 mm stator, 28.6 mm bell, 18.6 mm height, 5 mm shaft, 16 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything MEPS doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
