3 to 4-inch FPV motor

iFlight XING2 2205

A 2205 that iFlight benches on 3- to 3.5-inch props: a one-piece bell, a 5 mm shaft, 9 × 4 × 4 bearings, and 710 g of pull per motor on a Nazgul 3535 on 4S (3200KV).

  • 3- to 3.5-inch props, as iFlight tested it
  • 6S (2300KV) or 2S–4S (3200KV)
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 2205 motor drawn from iFlight’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are iFlight’s bench figures for the 3040 prop at 24 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 50% throttle.

At 60% with the 3040: 222 g of thrust, 9.9 A, 236 W, 0.94 g per watt.

On your quad

3.0 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 1,956 g with the 3040 at 24 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 888 g, 1.4 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What you get for $17.99

  • Curved N52H magnets

Centre-slotted arc magnets. iFlight says they cut the motor's response time, so it brakes and accelerates faster.

  • One-piece bell

iFlight's Unibell, with a 5 mm shaft protruding 13.5 mm.

  • 9 × 4 × 4 mm bearings

NMB bearings per iFlight's test reports (its product page says NSK/NMB).

  • Two KVs, one weight

    2300KV for 6S and 3200KV for 2S–4S, both 25.2 g with wires.

What to pair it with

Our reading of iFlight’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
Rated for at least the motor's peak current: about 29 A for the 2300KV on a 3040 at 24 V, and 33 A for the 3200KV on a Nazgul 3535 at 16.8 V. (iFlight 2300KV test report, iFlight 3200KV test report)
Props
On the 3200KV at 4S, iFlight's Nazgul 3535 pulled 710 g at full throttle and the Nazgul Cine 3040 703 g on less current. On the 2300KV at 6S, the 3040 pulled the most (489 g) but ran hottest, 93 °C. (iFlight 2300KV test report, iFlight 3200KV test report)
Battery
6S for the 2300KV; 2S–4S for the 3200KV. (iFlight 2300KV test report, iFlight 3200KV test report)
Frame
Four M2 holes on a 12 mm circle (sold as "12 × 12"); the frame needs that pattern. Four M2×7 screws and an M5 flange nut come in the box. (iFlight product page, iFlight 2300KV test report)

Bench data

Redrawn from iFlight’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 2300KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.834,0403,971 Hz23,828
4S full16.838,6404,508 Hz27,048
6S nominal22.251,0605,957 Hz35,742
6S full25.257,9606,762 Hz40,572

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from iFlight’s published sizes: the 22 × 5 mm stator, 28.3 mm bell, 16 mm height, 5 mm shaft, 12 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything iFlight doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
