2–3-inch toothpick FPV motor

iFlight XING2 1404

A 9.1 g motor for ultralight 3-inch toothpicks: a one-piece bell, NSK bearings, and 512 g of pull per motor on a 4030 prop at 16 V (3800KV).

Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 1404 motor drawn from iFlight’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are iFlight’s bench figures for the 4030 prop at 16 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 50% throttle.

Version

iFlight tested it on 16 V, a 4S pack.

What it pulls

iFlight’s own bench test, one line per prop. Drag across the chart to move the throttle; the model above follows.

At 60% with the 4030: 298 g of thrust, 4.4 A, 71 W, 4.22 g per watt.

On your quad

3.2 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 2,048 g with the 4030 at 16 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 1,192 g, 1.8 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What you get

  • 9.1 g with wires

iFlight designed it for ultralight toothpick builds, 3-inch quads on an AIO board.

  • One-piece bell

iFlight's Unibell; its XING2 description says the bells are 7075 aluminium.

  • Curved N52H magnets

Centre-slotted arc magnets set close to the stator. iFlight says they shorten the motor's response time.

  • NSK bearings with an O-ring

iFlight puts an O-ring between bell and stator above the bearing, which it says absorbs crash impacts and keeps the bearing gap tight.

  • Single-strand windings

One strand per tooth, 220 mΩ between phases on the 3800KV.

ESC
Rated for at least the motor's peak current: 14 A for the 3000KV, 16 A for the 3800KV and 18 A for the 4600KV, on a 4030 prop at 16 V. A 20 A AIO or 4-in-1 covers all three. (iFlight 3800KV test report, iFlight 3000KV test report, iFlight 4600KV test report)
Props
iFlight tested every KV with a 4030 (4 × 3) prop at 16 V: 489 g, 512 g and 574 g at full throttle for the 3000KV, 3800KV and 4600KV. (iFlight 3800KV test report, iFlight 3000KV test report, iFlight 4600KV test report)
Battery
3S or 4S for all three KVs; iFlight's bench runs are on 16 V (4S). (iFlight product page, iFlight 3800KV test report)
Frame
Four M2 holes on a 9 mm circle (sold as "9 × 9"). M2×5 and M2×7 screws come in the box. (iFlight product page, iFlight 3800KV test report)

Bench data

Redrawn from iFlight’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 3800KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.856,2405,624 Hz33,744
4S full16.863,8406,384 Hz38,304
6S nominal22.284,3608,436 Hz50,616
6S full25.295,7609,576 Hz57,456

A 12-pole rotor has 6 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 6 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 36 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from iFlight’s published sizes: the 14 × 4 mm stator, 19.9 mm bell, 13.5 mm height, 1.5 mm shaft, 9 mm mounting circle and 9 teeth and 12 magnets. Anything iFlight doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
