3 to 4-inch FPV motor

iFlight XING 2205

A 2205 on 6S with a one-piece bell, a 5 mm steel shaft and NSK bearings, 25.3 g with wires: 1458 g of pull per motor on a 4-inch tri-blade on iFlight's 24 V bench (2450KV).

  • 4-inch tri-blade and 3.6-inch props, as iFlight tested it
  • 6S (2300KV, 2450KV) or 2S–4S (3200KV)
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 2205 motor drawn from iFlight’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are iFlight’s bench figures for the HQ 4 × 3 × 3 prop at 24 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 50% throttle.

Version

iFlight tested it on 24 V, a 6S pack.

At 60% with the HQ 4 × 3 × 3: 705 g of thrust, 13.0 A, 313 W, 2.25 g per watt.

On your quad

9.0 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 5,832 g with the HQ 4 × 3 × 3 at 24 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 2,820 g, 4.3 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What you get

  • 5 mm steel shaft

iFlight calls it high-strength; it carries an M5 thread for the prop nut and protrudes 13.5 mm.

What to pair it with

Our reading of iFlight’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
Rated for at least the motor's peak current: 38.43 A for the 2450KV on a 4-inch tri-blade at 24 V, by iFlight's bench; iFlight gives 17.91 A for the 2300KV and 33.06 A for the 3200KV. (iFlight 2450KV test report, iFlight product page)
Props
iFlight tested the 2450KV with an HQ 4 × 3 × 3 tri-blade (1458 g at full throttle) and a Gemfan 3630 (1265 g). The 3630 ran cooler, 75 °C against 82 °C. (iFlight 2450KV test report)
Battery
6S for the 2300KV and 2450KV; 2S–4S for the 3200KV. (iFlight product page, iFlight 2450KV test report)
Frame
Four M2 holes on a 12 mm circle (sold as "12 × 12"); the frame needs that pattern. Four M2×7 screws and an M5 flange nut come in the box. (iFlight product page, iFlight 2450KV test report)

Bench data

Redrawn from iFlight’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 2450KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.836,2604,230 Hz25,382
4S full16.841,1604,802 Hz28,812
6S nominal22.254,3906,346 Hz38,073
6S full25.261,7407,203 Hz43,218

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from iFlight’s published sizes: the 22 × 5 mm stator, 28.6 mm bell, 16 mm height, 5 mm shaft, 12 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything iFlight doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
