2-inch cinewhoop motor

iFlight Defender 20 1204

The 5.8 g motor iFlight made for its sub-250 g Defender 20 cinewhoop: 6200KV on 3S, NMB bearings, and 177 g of pull per motor on the Defender 20's 2-inch tri-blade on iFlight's 12 V bench.

Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 1204 motor drawn from iFlight’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are iFlight’s bench figures for the Defender 20 2020-3 prop at 12 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 50% throttle.

At 60% with the Defender 20 2020-3: 98 g of thrust, 2.9 A, 35 W, 2.81 g per watt.

On your quad

1.1 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 708 g with the Defender 20 2020-3 at 12 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 392 g, 0.6 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What to pair it with

Our reading of iFlight’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
Rated for at least 7.85 A, the peak iFlight measured at full throttle on the Defender 20's 2-inch tri-blade at about 12 V. (iFlight 6200KV test report)
Props
iFlight tested it with the Defender 20 2020-3 tri-blade: 73 g at half throttle and 177 g at full. The Defender 20 frame's guards are built for 2-inch props. (iFlight 6200KV test report, iFlight Defender 20 frame page)
Battery
3S; iFlight gives 12 V as the input, and the battery it sells for the Defender 20 is a 3S 900 mAh pack. (iFlight product page, iFlight Defender 20 battery page)
Frame
Three M2 holes on a 9 mm circle, the Defender 20 frame's motor mount. Four M2×4 screws come in the box. (iFlight product page, iFlight 6200KV test report, iFlight Defender 20 frame page)

Bench data

Redrawn from iFlight’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 6200KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.891,7609,176 Hz55,056
4S full16.8104,16010,416 Hz62,496
6S nominal22.2137,64013,764 Hz82,584
6S full25.2156,24015,624 Hz93,744

A 12-pole rotor has 6 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 6 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 36 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from iFlight’s published sizes: the 12 × 4 mm stator, 15.3 mm bell, 11.2 mm height, 1.5 mm shaft, 9 mm mounting circle and 9 teeth and 12 magnets. Anything iFlight doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
