5-inch FPV freestyle and racing motor
Hobbywing XRotor 2207.5
Hobbywing’s 5-inch motor in two 6S versions, 1780KV for freestyle and 1980KV for racing, rated to pull 1827 g and 1868 g; 38 g with leads.
- 5-inch freestyle (1780KV) and racing (1980KV)
- 6S
- 5-inch three-blade props
The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 2207.5 motor drawn from Hobbywing’s published sizes, not its exact design. No-load speed is KV × 22.2 V, a nominal pack for this version. Hobbywing publishes no bench data for it.

Two KVs for two styles
Hobbywing aims the 1780KV at smooth, precise freestyle and the 1980KV at racing; both run on 6S.

Rated to pull 1.8–1.9 kg
Hobbywing rates the maximum thrust at 1827 g for the 1780KV on a Gemfan 51477 and 1868 g for the 1980KV on an HQ 5037.

Single-strand winding
Hobbywing says the single-strand winding gives a smoother throttle response and sheds heat better. The wire is rated for 220 °C.

Cooling, toothed prop mount
The prop mount is shaped to draw heat from the coils in flight and has anti-slip teeth to keep the prop from slipping.

0.2 mm laminations
The stator is stacked from 0.2 mm silicon-steel sheets, which Hobbywing says raises the flux density.
What to pair it with
Our reading of Hobbywing’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.
- ESC
- Hobbywing pairs it with its XRotor FPV G2 65A 4-in-1. It rates the peak current at 41 A (1780KV) and 49 A (1980KV) for 3 s. (Hobbywing product page, Hobbywing 1780KV drawing, Hobbywing 1980KV drawing)
- Props
- 5-inch three-blade props. For the 1780KV Hobbywing lists the Gemfan 51466 and 51477 and the HQ 5.1×4×3 and 4.9×3.7×3; for the 1980KV the HQ 4.9×3.7×3, Gemfan 51466, HQ 5037 and HQ 4.9×3.3×3. (Hobbywing 1780KV drawing, Hobbywing 1980KV drawing)
- Battery
- 6S LiPo for both KVs. (Hobbywing product page)
- Frame
- Four M3 holes on a 16 mm circle; 20 AWG leads, 150 mm long. (Hobbywing product page)

Inside the motor
A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:
- Stator. 22.5 × 7.6 mm, stacked from 0.2 mm silicon-steel sheets; 12 slots and 14 magnet poles. (Hobbywing 1780KV datasheet, Hobbywing product page)
- Winding. Single-strand enamelled wire rated for 220 °C. (Hobbywing product page)
- Magnets. Arc-shaped. (Hobbywing product page)
- Bearings. MR105ZZ. (Hobbywing 1780KV datasheet, Hobbywing 1980KV datasheet)
- Shaft. 5 mm with an M5 × 0.8 thread, standing 12 mm above the bell. (Hobbywing product page, Hobbywing 1780KV drawing)
- Base. Four M3 holes on a 16 mm circle; three 20 AWG black silicone leads, 150 mm long. (Hobbywing product page, Hobbywing 1780KV drawing)
How fast it spins
KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 1780KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.
| Battery | Volts | No-load rpm (KV × V) | Electrical frequency | ESC steps per second |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4S nominal | 14.8 | 26,344 | 3,073 Hz | 18,441 |
| 4S full | 16.8 | 29,904 | 3,489 Hz | 20,933 |
| 6S nominal | 22.2 | 39,516 | 4,610 Hz | 27,661 |
| 6S full | 25.2 | 44,856 | 5,233 Hz | 31,399 |
A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.
About the 3D model
A generic outrunner drawn from Hobbywing’s published sizes: the 22.5 × 7.6 mm stator, 28 mm bell, 19.9 mm height, 5 mm shaft, 16 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything Hobbywing doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
