3- to 4-inch light and long-range FPV motor

Flywoo NIN 1404 V2

A 9.5 g motor for light 3- to 4-inch builds, made with Dave_C for Flywoo's Explorer LR; on Flywoo's bench the 2750KV pulls 399 g on an HQ 3 × 3 three-blade at 22.2 V.

  • 3- to 4-inch light and long-range quads
  • 4S–6S (2750KV), 3S–4S (3750KV), 2S–4S (4850KV)
  • 3- and 4-inch props
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 1404 motor drawn from Flywoo’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are Flywoo’s bench figures for the HQ 3*3*3 prop at 22.2 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 50% throttle.

Version

Flywoo tested it on 14.8 V and 22.2 V, and suggests 4S packs of 650–1000 mAh.

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 1,596 g with the HQ 3*3*3 at 22.2 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 825 g, 1.3 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

Bench data

Redrawn from Flywoo’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

  • Bell. One piece (unibell), electroplated to a dark chrome. The top carries four M2 holes 5 mm apart around the shaft. (Flywoo drawing)
  • Magnets. Arc magnets, 12 poles. (Flywoo product page)
  • Stator. 14 mm across and 4 mm tall with 9 slots, wound with copper wire rated for very high heat. (Flywoo spec table)
  • Shaft. 1.5 mm where the prop fits, 2 mm inside the motor, standing 4 mm above the bell. (Flywoo spec table)

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 2750KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.840,7004,070 Hz24,420
4S full16.846,2004,620 Hz27,720
6S nominal22.261,0506,105 Hz36,630
6S full25.269,3006,930 Hz41,580

A 12-pole rotor has 6 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 6 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 36 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from Flywoo’s published sizes: the 14 × 4 mm stator, 19.4 mm bell, 14.1 mm height, 1.5 mm shaft, 12 mm mounting circle and 9 teeth and 12 magnets. Anything Flywoo doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
