3 to 4-inch FPV motor

EMAX E3 1407

A 15.4 g motor for 3 to 4-inch quads: 14 × 7 mm stator, 9N12P, an M5 prop shaft, N52SH magnets and single-strand windings, with up to 691 g of pull per motor on EMAX’s 16 V bench (3300KV).

  • 3 to 4-inch freestyle and cruising
  • 4S (3S for the 3300KV and 4100KV)
  • 3 to 4-inch props and 76–85 mm ducts
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 1407 motor drawn from EMAX’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are EMAX’s bench figures for the HQ 4 × 3 prop at 16 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 40% throttle.

Version

For 3 to 4-inch props; EMAX pitches it for freestyle and tested it at 16 V, and at 12 V on an 85 mm ducted prop.

On your quad

4.3 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 2,764 g with the HQ 4 × 3 at 16 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 1,484 g, 2.3 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

What to pair it with

Our reading of EMAX’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
EMAX rates the peak current on 4S at 16.5 A (2800KV), 22.5 A (3300KV) and 25.8 A (4100KV); the most its bench tests drew was 25.81 A (4100KV on a GF3052 at 16 V). A 30 A ESC covers all three. (EMAX spec sheet and bench tables)
Props
EMAX lists 3 to 4-inch props. On its 16 V bench the 3300KV pulled most on an HQ 4 × 3 (691 g) and the GF4023 (668 g); the 2800KV and 3300KV were also tested on 85 mm ducted props, and the 2800KV on a 76 mm eight-blade duct. (EMAX spec sheet and bench tables)
Battery
4S for the 2800KV; 3S–4S for the 3300KV and 4100KV. EMAX gives every KV’s peak figures on 4S. (EMAX spec sheet and bench tables)
Frame
Four M2 holes on a 12 mm circle (12 × 12 mm); M2 screws in 5 and 6 mm lengths come in the box. (EMAX spec sheet and bench tables)

Bench data

Redrawn from EMAX’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 3300KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.848,8404,884 Hz29,304
4S full16.855,4405,544 Hz33,264
6S nominal22.273,2607,326 Hz43,956
6S full25.283,1608,316 Hz49,896

A 12-pole rotor has 6 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 6 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 36 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from EMAX’s published sizes: the 14 × 7 mm stator, 19.1 mm bell, 16.4 mm height, 5 mm shaft, 12 mm mounting circle and 9 teeth and 12 magnets. Anything EMAX doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
