2 to 4-inch FPV motor

EMAX E3 1404

A 9.9 g micro motor for 2 to 4-inch quads: 14 × 4 mm stator, 9N12P, N52SH magnets and single-strand windings, with up to 471 g of pull per motor at full throttle on EMAX’s 16 V bench (4800KV).

  • 3 to 4-inch freestyle and long range
  • 2 to 3.5-inch racing (6000KV)
  • 4S (all three KVs; 6000KV from 2S)
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 1404 motor drawn from EMAX’s published sizes, not its exact design. No-load speed is KV × 14.8 V, a nominal pack for this version. EMAX publishes no bench data for it.

Version

For 3 to 4-inch props; EMAX pitches it for freestyle. Best full-throttle bench result: 471 g at 16 V on an HQ 3 × 1.6 three-blade, 16.87 A.

What you get

  • 471 g at 16 V

    At full throttle on 16 V, EMAX’s bench test of the 4800KV gave 471 g on an HQ 3 × 1.6 three-blade, drawing 16.87 A (269.92 W).

  • 9.9 g with leads

EMAX weighs the motor at 9.9 g with its 120 mm, 24 AWG leads; the bell is anodised 7075 aluminium.

  • N52SH magnets, single-strand windings

EMAX uses high-temperature N52SH arc magnets in a one-piece outer rotor, and single-strand windings, which it says lower resistance and heat under load.

  • NSK bearings, steel shaft

A steel shaft runs in NSK precision bearings, which EMAX says cut noise and vibration at high rpm.

What to pair it with

Our reading of EMAX’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
EMAX rates the peak current on 4S at 14.2 A (3700KV), 16.9 A (4800KV) and 19.8 A (6000KV); its best full-throttle bench results drew up to 19.77 A. A 20 A ESC covers all three. (EMAX USA product page)
Props
3 to 4-inch props for the 3700KV and 4800KV, 2 to 3.5-inch for the 6000KV. EMAX’s best 16 V results came on a GF 3.5 × 2.0 three-blade (3700KV, 426 g), an HQ 3 × 1.6 three-blade (4800KV, 471 g) and an HQ 2.2 × 2 three-blade (6000KV, 439 g). (EMAX USA product page)
Battery
3S–4S for the 3700KV and 4800KV, 2S–4S for the 6000KV; EMAX gives every KV’s peak figures on 4S. (EMAX USA product page)
Frame
Four M2 holes on a 9 mm circle; M2 screws in 5, 6 and 6.5 mm lengths come in the box. (EMAX USA product page)

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 4800KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.871,0407,104 Hz42,624
4S full16.880,6408,064 Hz48,384
6S nominal22.2106,56010,656 Hz63,936
6S full25.2120,96012,096 Hz72,576

A 12-pole rotor has 6 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 6 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 36 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from EMAX’s published sizes: the 14 × 4 mm stator, 19.1 mm bell, 1.5 mm shaft, 9 mm mounting circle and 9 teeth and 12 magnets. Anything EMAX doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
