2–3-inch toothpick FPV motor

EMAX E3 1303

A 6.6 g micro motor for 2 to 3.5-inch quads: 13 × 3 mm stator, 9N12P, N52SH magnets and single-strand windings, with up to 306 g of pull per motor on EMAX’s 12 V bench (8000KV).

  • 2 to 3-inch toothpicks and micro freestyle
  • 3S (8000KV), 4S (5000KV) or 1S–2S (11000KV)
  • 2 to 3.5-inch props
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 1303 motor drawn from EMAX’s published sizes, not its exact design. Thrust, current and power are EMAX’s bench figures for the GF3018 prop at 12 V, read straight across between its throttle steps. Its data starts at 40% throttle.

Version

For 2 to 3-inch props; EMAX pitches it for freestyle and toothpicks and tested it at 8 and 12 V.

On your quad

1.9 : 1

Thrust to weight at full throttle: four motors pull 1,224 g with the GF3018 at 12 V.

At 60% throttle they pull 744 g, 1.1 times the quad’s weight.

All-up weight is the quad ready to fly, with its battery and camera. The thrust is the maker’s static bench figure; in the air it is lower.

  • 306 g on 3S

    On EMAX’s 12 V bench the 8000KV pulled 306 g at full throttle on a GF3018 two-blade, drawing 18.8 A (225.6 W).

  • 6.6 g with leads

EMAX weighs the motor at 6.6 g with its 80 mm, 24 AWG leads; the bell is anodised 7075 aluminium.

  • N52SH magnets, single-strand windings

EMAX uses high-temperature N52SH arc magnets, which it says keep their strength under load, and single-strand windings to keep resistance and heat down.

  • NSK bearings, steel shaft

A steel shaft runs in NSK precision bearings, which EMAX says cut noise and vibration at high rpm.

What to pair it with

Our reading of EMAX’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
EMAX rates the peak current at 10.7 A (5000KV on 4S), 18.8 A (8000KV on 3S) and 21.6 A (11000KV on 2S); its bench tests peaked at 21.62 A (11000KV, GF3016, 7.4 V). An ESC rated for at least 22 A per motor covers all three. (EMAX USA product page, EMAX bench tables)
Props
EMAX lists 2 to 3.5-inch props for the 5000KV and 2 to 3-inch for the 8000KV and 11000KV. On its bench the 8000KV pulled most on the GF3018 two-blade (306 g at 12 V), the 5000KV on the AVAN 2.5-inch three-blade (255 g at 16 V) and the 11000KV on the GF3016 (245 g at 7.4 V). (EMAX USA product page, EMAX bench tables)
Battery
2S–4S for the 5000KV, 2S–3S for the 8000KV and 1S–2S for the 11000KV. (EMAX USA product page, EMAX drawing and spec list)
Frame
Four M2 holes on a 9 mm circle; 5 mm and 6.5 mm M2 screws come in the box. (EMAX drawing and spec list)

Redrawn from EMAX’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 8000KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.8118,40011,840 Hz71,040
4S full16.8134,40013,440 Hz80,640
6S nominal22.2177,60017,760 Hz106,560
6S full25.2201,60020,160 Hz120,960

A 12-pole rotor has 6 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 6 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 36 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from EMAX’s published sizes: the 13 × 3 mm stator, 17.3 mm bell, 10.6 mm height, 1.5 mm shaft, 9 mm mounting circle and 9 teeth and 12 magnets. Anything EMAX doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
