3- to 5-inch FPV motor

Diatone Mamba TOKA 2004

A 20 × 4 mm motor for 3- to 5-inch quads, 1700KV for 4S–6S or 2900KV for 3S–4S, 17.5–18 g with leads, that pulled about 1 kg at full throttle on a GF5125 on Diatone's bench.

  • 3- to 5-inch quads
  • 6S (1700KV) or 4S (2900KV)
  • 12 × 12 mm M2 motor mounts
Drawing the 3D model…

The spin is an illustration: the model turns at 1/600 of the no-load speed, and it is a generic 2004 motor drawn from Diatone’s published sizes, not its exact design. No-load speed is KV × 22.2 V, a nominal pack for this version. Diatone’s bench tables for it step by thrust rather than throttle, so they are in the bench data below, not on this readout.

What you get

What to pair it with

Our reading of Diatone’s numbers, so your build matches what the motor was tested with.

ESC
Diatone's maximum currents are 17.52 A for the 1700KV and 31.63 A for the 2900KV. A 25 A ESC covers the 1700KV; the 2900KV wants 35 A or more. (Diatone product page (archived), Diatone 1700KV spec sheet, Diatone 2900KV spec sheet)
Props
3- to 5-inch on Diatone's spec sheets (its page says 3.5- to 5-inch). Its bench tests use a GF5125. (Diatone product page (archived), Diatone 1700KV spec sheet, Diatone 2900KV spec sheet)
Battery
4S–6S for the 1700KV, tested at 24 V; 3S–4S for the 2900KV, tested at 16 V. (Diatone product page (archived), Diatone 1700KV spec sheet, Diatone 2900KV spec sheet)
Frame
Four M2 holes on a 12 × 12 mm pattern. (Diatone product page (archived), Diatone 1700KV spec sheet)

Bench data

Redrawn from Diatone’s test reports. Thrust is static pull on a bench, more than you get in flight. Power is volts × amps; efficiency is thrust divided by power.

Inside the motor

A brushless outrunner: the coils stand still in the middle and the magnets spin around them. From the top down:

How fast it spins

KV is the motor’s no-load speed per volt. With nothing on the shaft, the 1700KV version reaches about these speeds; a prop loads the motor and brings it down, typically to around 70–75% of these figures at full throttle.

BatteryVoltsNo-load rpm (KV × V)Electrical frequencyESC steps per second
4S nominal14.825,1602,935 Hz17,612
4S full16.828,5603,332 Hz19,992
6S nominal22.237,7404,403 Hz26,418
6S full25.242,8404,998 Hz29,988

A 14-pole rotor has 7 pole pairs, so every turn of the shaft is 7 electrical cycles, and a six-step ESC switches the phases 42 times per turn.

About the 3D model

A generic outrunner drawn from Diatone’s published sizes: the 20 × 4 mm stator, 26.2 mm bell, 13.7 mm height, 1.5 mm shaft, 12 mm mounting circle and 12 teeth and 14 magnets. Anything Diatone doesn’t publish is typical for a motor this size, and the bell’s spoked top, the base and the inside are a generic design, not this motor’s. The colours are read off the maker’s product photos. There are no logos or markings: it is our drawing, not the maker’s.
